How to Scan a QR Code on Any Phone (iPhone & Android)

You don't need to download a separate QR code reader app anymore — both iPhone and Android have scanning built directly into the camera. Here's exactly how to use it, plus what to do if a code won't scan.

How to scan a QR code on iPhone

  1. Open the built-in Camera app (no need for a separate QR scanner app).
  2. Point the camera at the QR code and hold it steady for a second.
  3. A yellow notification banner appears at the top or bottom of the screen showing the link or content.
  4. Tap the banner to open it in Safari or the relevant app.

If scanning doesn't trigger automatically, check Settings → Camera and make sure Scan QR Codes is turned on.

How to scan a QR code on Android

  1. Open the Camera app (most Android phones, including Samsung and Pixel, support QR scanning natively).
  2. Point the camera at the code until a frame or link preview appears on screen.
  3. Tap the on-screen prompt to open the link.

If your phone's camera doesn't detect QR codes automatically, you can also scan via Google Lens — open the Google app, tap the Lens icon, and point it at the code — or swipe down for Google Assistant and use its built-in scanner.

Why won't a QR code scan?

  • Poor lighting or glare — move to better light or tilt the surface to avoid reflections.
  • Code is too small or too far away — move closer, or ask for a larger printed version.
  • Low contrast design — QR codes with light colors on light backgrounds are hard for cameras to detect.
  • Camera out of focus — tap the screen on the code to force the camera to focus.
  • Damaged or obscured code — QR codes have error correction, but too much damage (tears, stickers, heavy glare) can break decoding.

Is scanning a QR code safe?

Scanning itself is safe — it just reveals a link or text before you open it. The risk is the same as clicking any unfamiliar link: check the URL preview your phone shows before tapping through, especially on QR codes in public places, and avoid entering sensitive information on a site you don't recognize.
